Dissecting Steps to Christ
As a young child, I always wondered why people talked about Ellen G. White when we were at church. I often couldn’t understand why there was a consistent reference to Ellen G. White books such as Steps to Christ during Bible studies and other lessons.
However, I soon realized that her books weren’t in competition with the Bible. No way! In fact, she also made this assertion that her writings were based on inspiration and were a lesser light to expound on God’s truth.
Are Ellen G. White Books Competing with the Bible?
See the comments below from egwwritings.org:
The writings of Ellen White are not a substitute for Scripture. They cannot be placed on the same level. The Holy Scriptures stand alone, the unique standard by which her and all other writings must be judged and to which they must be subject” (Seventh-day Adventists Believe . . . , Ministerial Association, General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, Washington D.C., 1988, p. 227). Yet, as Ellen White herself noted, “The fact that God has revealed His will to men through His Word, has not rendered needless the continued presence and guiding of the Holy Spirit. On the contrary, the Spirit was promised by our Saviour to open the Word to His servants, to illuminate and apply its teachings” (The Great Controversy, p. vii).
So, that’s where the answer lies. Ellen G. White writings have never been a replacement for the Holy Scriptures. She just happened to be a young woman of 17 who was ready to allow the Lord to use her.
A View of Steps to Christ
Now, let’s talk about Steps to Christ. Did you know that this little but powerful book which was first published in 1893 has been translated to over 140 languages (Yoruba inclusive) of the world? It is, in fact, the most read Ellen G. White book next to The Great Controversy and The Desire of Ages.
Well, I wouldn’t have expected anything less. It’s a book that describes the love of God using the most beautiful and descriptive language.
Below are pictures of my copy of Steps to Christ, a 127-page book filled with clear and captivating images which illustrate the messages in it.
Have you read this book? If you have, then you’d understand my reasons for being so passionate about this book.
More so, this book has 94% rating on Google Books which goes to show that many people who have read this little but life-changing book have found it remarkable.
My Experience While Reading Steps to Christ
I’ve read Steps to Christ twice, first in 2015 and then in 2017. The first time, I spent about a month reading it. And that wasn’t because it was voluminous. No. For every page of the book, I found myself appreciating God’s love anew.
As a matter of fact, Ellen G. White had a way with words. She knew how to describe tough ideas in gentle ways while also ensuring that the truth of the messages is intact.
I recently tweeted on the Twitter account that “it takes someone who knows love to give love.” This is so true. Chapter 1 of Steps to Christ discussed “God’s Love For Man” and it carefully presents the beauty of nature, humanity, and the death of Christ almost 2,000 years ago.
Yesterday was Valentine’s Day and it was a perfect opportunity to celebrate love, friendship, family, and humanity. When my hubby and I had our evening outing, we saw eateries and malls filled up with people – old and young.
Families and friends had come out to celebrate their loved ones. Even the older folks weren’t left behind.
Now, if human beings can commit to such devotion and expression of love, how much more would God do? And that’s what He did when he allowed Christ to die for us.
God had loved us before Christ’s sacrifice, and Christ’s sacrifice created a stronger love between God the Father and God the Son.
How Steps to Christ Has Touched My Life
Reading Steps to Christ showed me so much of my insufficiency and the need to depend on God for my sustenance. It further revealed to me how incomplete I am without God.
This is one of the most personal Ellen G. White Books that has helped me deal with:
- Unforgiveness (which is considered as one of the problems of 61% of cancer patients)
- Poor communication
- And a host of others!
As a Yoruba woman, it would be interesting to read Steps to Christ in Yoruba using this link. There’s so much to learn from reading a book as inspirational as this one.
You can call it a personal growth book which touches not just your spiritual life but also your physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing.
It’s more powerful than books such as Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People which I have read many times too.

But until then, let me leave you with one of my best excerpts (on page 16):
“The more we study the divine character in the light of the cross, the more we see mercy, tenderness, and forgiveness blended with equity and justice, and the more clearly we discern innumerable evidences of a love that is infinite and a tender pity surpassing a mother’s yearning sympathy for her wayward child.”
